About Me
Benefitting From Counseling

Unfortunately, I had a pretty traumatic childhood. My parents were always fighting, and I was faced with trying to decide what to do about my own personal feelings. When I got older, I knew that I needed to do something to relieve the stress that I was feeling even many years later, so I started focusing on going to counseling. My first few appointments were a little nerve-racking, but the counselor worked hard to make me feel comfortable. I was really impressed with how gentle and kind she was, and I felt really great about the progress I was making. This blog is all about benefiting from counseling.

Three Tips For Overcoming A Drug Addiction

Ron Henry

Battling a drug addiction on your own can be very difficult. There are many people who relapse time and again because they do not have the support they need to stick with the recovery process. If you are battling a drug addiction, use the guide below to learn the steps to take to overcome your addiction.

Be Willing to Meet with a Counselor

When you battle a drug addiction, you need to be willing to talk to a counselor about your addiction. He or she will need to know what things trigger your need to do the drugs on an emotional level. While you may think that your addiction is only a physical addiction, there is a good chance that you are addicted to the fact that the drugs allows you to no longer feel uncomfortable feelings.

Be Willing to Go to Meetings

When you are battling an addiction, it is important to know that you are not alone in the battle. There are others who are going through the same thing that you are going through and the things that you will go through. The treatment center will have daily, weekly, and even monthly meetings available. You will need to start with meetings on a daily basis. It will be very difficult to overcome your addiction and resist temptation at first, and going to meetings on a daily basis will allow you to be held accountable for your decisions by more than just yourself. Eventually, you will not have to go to meetings as often, but should continue to go to them at least once a month to ensure that you are able to resist any temptation that arises.

Be Willing to Battle the Physical Dependency

When you are overcoming your addiction, your body will go through difficult physical changes. Your body will be craving the drug, and being able to fight the cravings may not be easy. There are medications that you can use to help decrease the cravings. They are nonaddictive, so you do not have to worry about getting addicted to them as well.

When you finally overcome your addiction, you will be ready to help other people overcome their addictions. You will be able to inspire them and help them know what to expect and provide tips for how you overcame your addiction. Being able to mentor someone can help you stay away from the drugs for the rest of your life.
