Don't let things get out of control. Here are four tips that will help you cope with depression during the holidays.

Make a Budget

Depression can lead to overspending, especially when you're trying to find a way to overcome the feelings you're experiencing. Unfortunately, overspending can bring on additional feelings of depression once you realize that you've spent yourself into debt. Break the vicious cycle before it begins by making a budget – and sticking to it. Sit down and create a budget that will help you avoid overspending during the holidays. You don't have to cut yourself off from all frivolous spending, but you do need to allot a specific amount of money for it. For instance, budget $100 for holiday extravagances. Once that money is gone, don't spend any more.

Take Time for Yourself

During the holidays, you can get so busy taking care of everyone, and everything else, that you forget to make time for yourself. Unfortunately, that can lead to fatigue, which can increase the feelings of isolation and depression. To help avoid depression this holiday season, be sure to take time for yourself. Go out for a walk or go and get a massage. Spending some time taking care of yourself will allow you to relax and regroup.

Find a Support Group

When you suffer from depression, it's important that you surround yourself with people who can give you the support you need. This holiday season, take the time to find a support group in your area. Arrange to attend several meetings before the holidays get into full-swing. This will allow you to familiarize yourself with the group. This will ensure that you have a safe place to go should the need arise.

Get Professional Help

If you haven't found professional help for your depression, now's the time to do that. Depression isn't something that you should try to handle on your own, especially if it's interfering with your daily life. Speak to a counselor in your area so that you can get the treatment you need for your depression.
