About Me
Benefitting From Counseling

Unfortunately, I had a pretty traumatic childhood. My parents were always fighting, and I was faced with trying to decide what to do about my own personal feelings. When I got older, I knew that I needed to do something to relieve the stress that I was feeling even many years later, so I started focusing on going to counseling. My first few appointments were a little nerve-racking, but the counselor worked hard to make me feel comfortable. I was really impressed with how gentle and kind she was, and I felt really great about the progress I was making. This blog is all about benefiting from counseling.

Think You Are Depressed? Symptoms You Will Have And Treatment Options For Depression

Ron Henry

If you have been feeling down for the past few days this is likely not depression. If you have been feeling bad for a few months, however, then you may be dealing with depression. A sad mood generally goes away on its own, but depression will not without treatment. Below are some symptoms that you will have if you are depressed, as well as treatment options available.

Signs of Depression

Depression generally causes a person to sleep too much or sleep too little. Your appetite may also change, such as not eating as much or eating more than you normally do.

If you have things that you enjoy doing, you may not enjoy doing them anymore. For example, if you have always loved gardening and your garden is unkempt and full of weeds this is a big sign that you are depressed.

You may find it hard to take a shower and to get dressed, as well as be satisfied sitting in your home alone doing nothing. You won't mind going somewhere with greasy hair and dirty clothes, such as to the store. Housecleaning is difficult as it can be hard to get yourself up out of a chair to do anything.

Always feeling tired is another symptom. You may feel tired no matter if you get a lot of sleep or not. The fatigue can be overwhelming, and it will get so bad that you have to take a nap.  Because you are so tired, you will likely not clean your home like you once did or keep up with your laundry. You won't care about a dirty home and piles of dirty laundry.

The most serious symptom of depression is thoughts of suicide. If you are doing this, then you need to get treatment immediately.

Depression Treatment

There are different forms of depression treatment, so you should not have a problem finding something that will work well for you.

One type is talk therapy, which is known as conversation therapy. With this, you will sit down with your counselor and talk about your life to try to understand why you are feeling depressed. You may be surprised at what you find out about yourself during this treatment.

Another type of treatment is electric current treatment. During the therapy, chemicals are released inside your brain. This helps the nerves in your brain to communicate to each other much better, which helps with depression. This treatment is only used for people that have severe depression.

Your doctor may prescribe medication to help relieve your symptoms. In most cases, this will not work well by itself and you need to use other forms of treatment along with the medication. The doctor will start you on a low dose and slowly raise the level until you start feeling better.

Talk with your counselor about this information and they can give you many more details. Contact a clinic, like Dr Kuris Counseling Centers, for help.
